We live in a topsy turvey world,
Where the criminals can cry 'Police!'
Where splintered hearts, and blinded minds
Are freely given leave to fleece.

And then, to win some wrong redress,
Against the unsuspecting, and the true.
That was how it seemed with me,
When I chanced my arm with you.

I'd seen the 3 card trick performed
Many times before, but never thought,
When I placed my bet with you,
To be the mark, sucked in and caught.

I really should have walked away,
Remembering that it was sleight;
But then you raised your eyes to mine,
And my caution took to flight.

I knew that I could never win
That rigged, green baize table game;
But kept on thinking about your eyes,
And put down my money, all the same.

Love does turn wise men into fools,
Who will pursue the Lady fair,
Forgetting that when the card is turned,
She is never, ever, there.
